Asian Relations Conference. March-April 1947. Racial Problems

1947

The mass of the East Indian Archipelago is Dutch and the success of Indonesian resistance seems to be the harbinger of a brighter period in the history of this area. [...] The problem before Australia is not internal but the difficulty of maintaining her White Australia policy in the face of the assertion of the surrouning peoples of Asia. [...] The Inter-Asian Conference must consider the question and arrive at a solution which while stressing the paramountcy of the interests of the People of the country concerned must also try to safeguard the legitimate interests of the settlers. [...] The Inter-Asian Conference will doubtless insist that all races show only skin-deep differences that all race feeling is only the result of prejudice and that the greatest danger to the peace of the world is the clash between white and coloured peoples. [...] If the West has committed the mistake of a display of dangerous race spirit the East must not repeat the mistake in another form or hinder any co-operative effort in the fulfilment of the purpose common to all humanity.
