SANNYASI SANNYASI AND FAKIR RAIDERS IN BENGAL CHAPTER I Sannyasis and Fakirs AooNsTANTLY recurring theme in the correspondence of the East India Company's officials especially those in the northern parts of Bengal during the latter half of the Eighteenth Sannyasi Century is the incursions of the nomadic bodies known as the Fokirs. [...] t Far to tho north-east of Mahastan on the bank of the Brahmaputra in the district now called the Caro Hills is the shrine of the saint Shah 'Carnal and to the south-cast of it on the other bank there is another shrine of the samo saint. [...] By Regulation I of 1793 the Governor General in Council exonerated the proprietors of land from the charge of keeping the police" and enacted for the "appointment of officers on the part of Government to superintend the police" and a now police scheme was introduced by Regulation XXII of 1703. [...] Transfers of estates from the jurisdiction of one Revemie Collector to that of another were allowed on the application of the revenue payers for facility of payment ; and those applications were readily acceded to owing to the insecurity of the country and the consequent risk in the transport of revenue.
