The choice of the place was due to the fact that the secondary teachers in Konkan districts had arranged to hold an EducationWeek at Ratnagiri in March and they very kindly agreed to fix the dates for the Week immediately preceding the dates proposed for the Conference session. [...] In one the Conference requested the University to discontinue the practice of levying fee with the application for registration and for maintaining the name of the school on the register of reconised schools. [...] A student had then the option of offering any one of the ancient Classical languages or one of the modern Indian languages right up to the B. A. But soon a change was made and the Vernaculars were abolished from the College examinations and a note in the calendar for 1866-67 stated that the persons who passed their Matriculation before 1863 in any one of the Vernaculars might offer it at the B. A [...] and I am forced to starve either the mother or the father." 2. Secondly it is a recognised principle of syllabus maing that the inclusion of a subject has to be decided upon by qpnsiderin(a) The importance of a subject as an aid to culture and education ; (b) The utility of the subject in after-life ; (c) The aptitude of the learner ; The study of English satiF.fies all our requirements in [...] 14 This Conference views with regret the abolition of the School Leaving Examination of the type held by the School Leaving Examination Board and recommends (a) the creation of a School Leaving Examination Board with adequate representation of secondary schools and (b) the recognition of the examination held by this Board by the University as well as the Department.
