[...] His early youth and a great part of his public life have been spent in the Bengal Presidency amongst the Bengalis and his thorough identfication with the interest of the people of the land of hi adoption his love sand unfailing sympathy with the hopes and aspiration of the people and his charming personality have enshrined hirti in the affectionate esteem and regard of the people. [...] (or twenty-eight years before) he delivered an eloquent extempore lecture on The Views of England on India at the eighth public meeting for the twentieth session of the Calcutta Literary Society held at the hall of the City College 13 Mirzapur Street uuder the presidency of Baba Sumsr Singh Sadi High Priest of the Sikh Temple at Patna before a crowded and respectable gathering. [...] The meeting dissolved with the customary vote of thanks to the Chain At the conclusion of the meeting alms were freely distributed to the poor and the needy without distinction of caste colour or creed as the Society was doing in previous years. [...] That the Office of the Calcutta Literary Society be remained closed for one day in his honour and that a Message of Condolence be forwarded to the bereaved members of his family." The meeting dissolved with the customary vote of thanks to the Chair.
