Reflections on the preceding details and on the condition of the Mahrattas as a military nation at this period.—Their claims on Nizam Ally occasion a temporary union of the chiefs.— Course of policy adopted by the English in the negotiation which preceded the war between the Mahrattas and Nizam Ally.— Discussions between the courts of Poona and Hyderabad—war declared—assembly of the armies respec [...] On the 29th of the same month Lord Cornwallis assumed the command of the army and marched on the nth February towards Nelore where he concentrated his forces and avanced to Bangalore which he invested on the 3th March and carried it by assault on the night of the 2rst of that month. [...] The possession of Dharwar and the forts taken by the Moghuls gave the allies a strong hold on the country situated between the Kistna and Toongbuddra ; Kooshgul and several other places of less note surrendered to Pureshram Bhow at the first summons ; and the occupation of the country with the consequent realization of revenue became so inviting to the Mahratta general that lie soon evinced [...] The Moghul army after months spent before Gurrumcondah in a series of operations still more feeble than those of the Mahrattas before Dharwar were at length put in possession of the lower fort by the exertions of Captain Read the officer who had succeeded to the command of the English detachment.* The Moghuls having resigned all hope of reducing the upper fort being anxious to join in the sieg [...] Without reference to the condition of the fomer dependents of the Peishwa and Nizam Ally or to that clause which secured a greater advatage to the party first in the field the allies rceived on equal share of the districts ceded by68 HISTORY OF THE MAHRATTAS.
