The reasons are not far to seek and among them are the heavy burdens imposed on the Industry by the Government of India and the State Government in respect of minimum wages the Plantation Code the very high costs of foodstuffs and indeed all the other items which go to make up the per pound cost of production. [...] The scheme for the establishment of the Central Factory—at Longai—is well advanced and I have great hopes that 1953 will see a completion of the arrangements to the undoubted advantage of the Gardens. [...] I found too a considerable improvement in the field work and it is a great pleasure to me to be able to record the keenness and efficiency of the Company’s European Managers and Assistants the Members of the Indian Executive Staff and the Labour Forces—on the various estates which go to make up the Longai Valley Tea Co. [...] The above Balance Sheet and annexed Profit 0 Loss and Appropriation Accounts which are in agreement with the books of account and returns from India give in our opinion and to the best of our information and according to the explanations given to us the information required by the Companies Act 1948 in the opener so required and give a true and fair view of the state of the Company’s affairs [...] for the following purposes:— To receive and pass the Directors’ Report and Accounts for the year ended 31st December 1951 To elect a Director To fix Auditors’ remuneration and to transact the ordinary business of the Company.
