ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA AND OF THE MUSEUM OF GEOLOGY CALCUTTA 1859-60 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA AND OF THE MUSEUM OF GEOLOGY CALCUTTA. [...] Henry B. Medlicott in the early part of the working season to enquire into the facts regarding the reported discovery of seams of coal near Murree in the Punjab; and more recently of myself to investigate the state and prospects of the Government iron works in Kumaon. [...] The importance of these enquiries no doubt amply justified their being taken up at the time but at the same time they unavoidably interferred with and seriously impeded the general progress of the systematic work of the Survey.[Geological Survey.] (4) PUBLICATIONS.—The third part of the first volume of the Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India was issued during the first half of the year [...] The sum appropriated for the purposes of this library although sufficient perhaps to maintainvaln established collection of books and keep it up to the latest date by the purchas’e of all new and valuable treatises bearing on our science is yet not adequate to the rapid formation of a good library of reference in all the branches of thht science. [...] I have already noticed the labors of each of these but I would here take the opportunity of adding my entire satisfaction with the steady application to their duties and the zealous and intelligent exertions of all and I think the progress of the Survey and of the museum during the year has been very satisfactory.
