The welcome increase of 17 709 cases is shared by all districts except only the two Railway charges; it indicates greater activity on the part of the Police in dealing with offences under the various Minor Acts Control orders and Acts and last but not the least offences in connection with the enforcement of the Prohibition Policy of Government. [...] The increase is generally due to the all-round economic depression high cost of living scarcity of food grains denotification of the Criminal Tribes and un employment of field labourers during the dry months of the year. [...] The increase is mainly due to the intensification of Prohibition measures involving a further reduction in the quotas of intoxicants made available for sale the imposition of restrictions on the transport of intoxicants and the increase in the number of ' closure' days of Excise Shops combined with the enactment of the " Bombay Prohibition Act 1949 " which penalised certain acts that were not fo [...] The strengthening of the Police Force enabled the agency responsible for the detection of excise crime to tackle more effectively the peculiar problems presented by the enforcements of the various prohibition measures and thus also contributed 'towards the increase in the number of offences detected. [...] The percentage of cases convicted to cases decided in the Courts is 87.48 in 1949 as against 82.89 in 1948 which shows an improvement on the part of the Police in putting up cases in the Courts.
