1905

In the west however the monotony of the landscape is varied by a range of hills which are the watershed btween the River Mahanadi of the Cuttack B2 IN AND AROUND PURI. [...] The chief places of interest in the Sub-Division of Puri are the town of Puri the hill of Dhauli and the Black Pagoda at Kanarak. [...] The first is the Hall of Oblations where the larger offerings are presented : the second is the Pillared HallElevation of the Temple of Jagannath Puri. [...] Within the pillared verandahs workmaship of a higher order is revealed in figures of armoured guardsmen and in the ornmentation of the pillars— the curve of the brackets being skilfully taken advatage of to represent the swelling bosoms and delicately retreating heads of beautiful women." Attached to the apartments is a court-yard quarried out of the solid hill-side. [...] Attention is called to the ornamental wall round the temple ; to the gate-way (Torana) on the west; and to the tank on the east.
