Further owing to the changes in the economic structure of Bengal analysed by us in the later chapters of this book the spectre of shortage of food of hoarding and of famine continue to stalk over our province. [...] A preliminary survey of a small number of villages in different areas of Bengal was carried out by the Anthropology Department of the Calcutta University in November and December 1943 to estimate the effects of the famine and a note embodying the results was issued by Prof. [...] The details of the organisation design and progress of the survey will be found in Chapters 1 and 2 of the Statistical Report published under the title A sample survey of After-Effectsof the Bengal Famine of 1943". [...] The total effect of this is that a much smaller group of families now own the bulk of paddy land while the majority of peasantry are in the position of having to work in the fields of these owners either as labourers or as share corppers. [...] The capacity of cultivating land depends for any pair of bullocks on the nature of the soil and the care taken of the animals.
