A history of education in the Punjab is outside the scope of the report but a brief review of the progress is given in order to get the proper perspective when considering the results of the present inquiry. [...] The Lyallpur colonists had to begin life afresh in an arid land with no houses few roads and the ever-present danger of the aggrieved original inhabitants the janglis; but their industry and perseverance has resulted in making the colony one of the richest parts of the Punjab growing onseventh of the province's cotton and one-tenth of its wheat. [...] In the following table the duration has been taken to mean for the "Formerly-employed" the period since their last job and for the "Never-employed" from the finish of their last scholastic or professional training irrespective of previous career ;* the intervening period in both cases was counted up to 1st August 1937 for the Lyallpur men and 1st January 1938 for the Hoshiarpur men. [...] The amount it was stated was handed over and that was the end of that for the "victim" The sons of the more influential families especially where they had received some college education often tried for posts of Kanungo Naib-Tahsildar and Sub-inspectorship in the Police and Co-operative departments but having failed to get any of these they would with the others have welcomed a post of a c [...] In the following table the latter group is considered from the end of formal education until the first salaried job was obtained : and in the next chapter the results are compared with those who were employed at the time of the inquiry :* Duration of unemployment Lyallpur Hoshiarpur TOTAL No.
