(3) The number of intern odes in the unmanured and manured treatments is nearly the same though the height of each internode in the latter is about 11 times that of the former. [...] An idea of the periodical fluctuations in the medium soil (95 acres) block (average of 5 bore holes) and in the heavy soil (5 acres) will be obtained from the Graph 8 and statistical significance of the various factors from the Table XIII given in the appendix. [...] Some of the methods are now standardized and are given in short below : (i) Botanical.—In the flowering varieties due to the rapid elongation of the peduncle of the inflorescence at the flowering time the usual method of measuring height from the base of the furrows to the highest visible transverse coloured mark on the leaf blade shows false increase in height and consequently gives quite an er [...] In order to eliminate the effect of flowering this method is therfore changed in the beginning of September well before the appearance of the flag leaf to the similar mark on the leaf blad e of the highest mature internode. [...] The periodical study of the root system shows only the intensity of the roots in the lower waterings—with practically no difference in the actual spread lateral or vertical in the different treatments.
