The spontaneity of the response to the appeal issued in this connection and the distinguished contributors who have so readily acceded to the request of the Committee to contrbute articles and send messages and greetings bear ample testmony if such a testimony were indeed required to the regard esteem and affection in which The Rev. [...] As a member of the Senate and of the Academic Bodies of the Unversity he has been honourably associated for over twenty five years and has served in the chief executive body of the University of Madras the Syndicate continuously almost since the rmodelled University was constituted under the University Act of 1923. [...] It is not for me to speak of the contributions he has made in the field of History and Economics; but those most competentFOREWORD 3 to pronounce a judgment have no doubt whatsoever that Father Carty is one of the few brilliant Professors of the science of Economics who have in a large measure shaped the career of distinguished economists of Southern India who to-day adorn the professorial chair [...] FATHER P. CARTY S. J. Hemmed in by the Atlantic on the west and by the Pyrenees on the south lies Beam the south-westernmost province of France noted among other things for the lovely sea-side resort of Biarritz which at that extreme corner stands like a living hinge between the last slopes of the hills and the waters of the Bay of Biscay and has for long been a great attraction to visitors th [...] Further special marks of this appreciation were the choice made of him by H. E. the Chancelor of the University to deliver the convocation Address in 1933 to the graduates of the year—an address which ranks with the best of its kind and has been assigned a place of honour in a recent collection of Convocation Addresses—and the invitation made to him by the University in 1939 to deliver a series
