1878

REPORT ON THE ANTIQUITIES IN THE BIDAR AND AURANGABAD DISTRICTS IN THE TERRITORIES OF HIS HIGHNESS THE NIZAM OF HAIDARABAD BEING THE RESULT OF THE THIRD SEASON'S OPERATIONS OF THE ARCItZEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF WESTERN INDIA. [...] It is a famous place of Hindu pilgrimage being the reputed scene of the goddess Bhavtull’s slaying the buffalo Asura or demon Mahisha who assumed the form of a male buffalo and as Tulj is one of the many names of the goddess the partner of giva the town is called after her. [...] It stands on the verge of what is locally known as the BAla Ghat one of the terraces by which the table land of the Dekhan descends towards the west and commands a fine view of the rich plain of the Solitpur zilla to the west and south lying about four hundred feet below it. [...] So also a mass of rock about ten feet in diameter cropping up from the soil on the verge of the ghfit a little to the south of the village and now bearing the rude outline of footprints is regarded as the spot where the goddess alighted from heaven on her errand of vengeance and over it has been raised the Ghfitagila temple a modern octagonal structure of mixed Muhammadan and Dravidian style [...] Dharhsinva is about twelve miles north of Tuljapur and twenty-four west by south from Bard standing just above the brow of the Bfilaghit which forms the watershed between the Skit on the west and the Term a large feeder of the Mitnjirli on the east.
