The work on paddy in BIHAR AND ORISSA has resolved itself into the selection of large numbers of single plants of promising types of paddy on all the farms in the province and the multplication of seed from these plants under careful observation with a view to the testing of the yield per acre of the most prmising against similar but later ripening local types for which the heavier yielder [...] Advantage is also being taken in the United Provinces of the fortuitous appearance in the crop of Cawnpore 13 wheat of a bearded type possessing in other respects the characteristics of the original. [...] The question of the trade classification of cotton has therefore been taken up in conjunction with some of the Directoris of the East India Cotton Association and the Standing Local Sub-Comittee is at present engaged on the examination of this important question directing its attention the first instance to possible changes in the Bombay rules and standards which would afford a definite in [...] For some years past the policy of the department has been the isoltion of pure strains and the introduction of these into general cultivation and very considerable success has been achieved in the long staple areas of Southern Gujarat (Surat-Broach) and in the Southern. [...] The question of the future of cotton research in Sind is still under consideration and the policy finally adopted must largely depend on the decision reached in regard to the construction of the Sukkur Barrage and the extension of canal irrigation.
