1. The Acts passed by the Legislative Council during the year 1858 which affect the Judicial administration of the country are the following : Act XXII of 1858 to maintain in force until the end of 1859 Acts XIV XVI and XVII of 1857 and to authorize in certain cases the transportation of offenders sentenced to imprisonment. [...] Acts XXXV and XXXVI of 1858 the former of which made better provision for the care of the estates of Lunatics not subject to the jurisdiction of the Supreme Courts of Judicature and the latter related to Lunatic Asylums. The usual returns of the business performed by the Civil Courts will be found in the Appendix.* The subjoined statement exhibits the amount Appendix A. of work to be performed and the arrears on the files of all the Civil Courts in the Presidency. [...] The Police gave most effective assistance in the repression of the outbreak in the Southern Mahratta country and in the protection of Khandeish and Guzerat from the incursions of the rebel force under Tantia Topie.
