The well-being of the people the commerce of the country and the revenue collected by Government all depend on the amount and distribution of the summer rainfall. [...] Defective aeration of the soil besides interfering with the respirtion of the active cells of the root and of the soil bacteria exercises a profound influence on the development of the root-system itself. [...] The greater the growth of root the better the develoment of the above-ground portion of the plant. [...] In the case of the production of natural indigo the plant by means of its root-nodules is able to work up the nitrogen of the air into the substance indican which is deposited in the leaves. [...] In the case of the wheat crop the best grown samples are always produced in tracts like the Meerut Division of the United Provinces or on the black soils of Central India where the soil in the rabi season is naturally highly porous.
