1936

The Committee also considered the importance of correlating the appearance of locusts with the incidence of rain or the changes in atmospheric humidity and recomended that the Locust Research Entomologist should examine last year's data in this connection and should make sure that t he data compiled in the next year were such as would yield the desired information. [...] The experimental work on the quality of food on sex maturity was examined and the Committee decided that work should be concentrated on a comparison of the influence of fresh food with that of old food. [...] The' Comittee recommended that during the coining year experimental work should be continued on :- (1) the number of generations possible in the year (2) the influence of the quality of food on the sex maturity of the locusts (3) the colouration of the adults in relation to the change of enviroment and (4) food preferences of locusts. [...] With regard to the Locust Research Entomologist's suggestions for future work at page 24 of the report the Committee considered that provision could be made for a desert outpost at Kech by a re-arrangement of the existing sanctioned staff.3 An extension of the survey along the coasts of Iran and Arabia did not appear to be practical but the Locust Research Entomologist was asked to put up a quest [...] The Committee approved of the report and noted that the results obtained from the experiments on the influence of humidity on sexual maturity indicated that between 20 per cent and 85 per cent relative humidity the amount of moisture in the air had no marked effect on hastening or retarding the maturtion of the sex glands.
