The preparation of this Year Book has hoever been made possible on account of the co-operation which I have received from the various Ministries of the Central Government the Governments of the PrOvinces and the States the Officers of the International Labour Office and several others. [...] Thus the bulk of the workers reside on the estates In some tracts however notably in the south and in the case of coffee and rub: her plantations the workers come from neighbouring villages. [...] EMPLOYMENT EXCHANGES The last three years have witnessed a now development in the field of the recruitment of labour namely the institution of the Directorate of Employment Exchanges by the Government of India. [...] Registrations and Placings.—The following table gives the number of registrations and the number of applicants placed in employment by the vari nis exchanges in the Indian Dominion in 1947 and in the first nine months of 1948. [...] The figures available from these sources for 1946 1947 and the first nine mouths of 1948 are presented in the following table TABLE XXV PERCENTAGE OF ABSENTEEISM IN THE COTTON MILL INDUSTRY The figures for the various centres may not be quite comparable on account of the possible differences in the methods of compilation and definitions.
