A new effort under official auspices to revive British exports will be a feature of 1939 and the effort will not be confined to reaping the benefits of the Anglo-American Trade Agreement alone substantial though these should prove directly in the form of larger shipments of British goods to the United States and indirectly in the form of larger exports to the Colonies exporting primary produc [...] Herr Brinkmann Secretary of State in the Ministry in a recent speech gave a number of figures on the German financial situation from which it appears that the deficit of the Nazi Treasury has reached the appalling total of £100 000 000 a month : a gap which suggests that the "fine " of £83 5"million imposed on the Jewish community may be only the first of a series of similar levies which will n [...] The fall in the revenue of the Government of India and the smaller contribution by the railways to the General Revenues will affect the provincial revenues and it appears doubtful whether the Central Government will for a long time be able to give the full share of the income tax revenue to provincial goverments on the basis of the Niemeyer award. [...] Numerous reasons were adduced for the failure of the Travancore National Bank and some sections of the Indian press expressed the opinion that the Reserve Bank of India as the custodian of banking and financial structure in the country was not readily helpful—may be for technical reasons. [...] One great change has been effected in the administration of the income tax law and that is the setting up of an Appellate Tribunal to hear all appeals in the place of the Commissioner of Income Tax.
