[...] THE purpose of the present work is to enumerate briefly in the order of time the historical events connected with the history of India from the closing years of the fifteenth century when by the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope in 1487 by Bartholomew de Diaz and the opening of a direct sea route to the East the Portuguese began to contend for the exclusive commerce of India. [...] European interest in India was thus stimulated and led to the opening of all the south of Asia to the knoledge and commerce of the West.
