Public Works Department Government of India. Triennial Review of Irrigation in India 1918-1921

In Part I of the present review a brief description is given of the circumstances which render irrigation necessary in India of the various classes of works by which this irrigation is effected of the results achieved and of the policy governing the administration of the subject. [...] Perennial canals are provided with some arrangement in the vicinity of their heads usually in the form of an obstrution across the bed of the parent stream by means of which they are enabled to obtain their supplies irrespective of the level of the water in the river. [...] The diagram further shows that as already explained by far the greater portion of the irrigation effeo.ed from Government works is confined to the low-lying alluvial tracts within the precarious zone in the Punjab Sind the United Provinces and the deltaic areas in Madras. [...] The responsibility for the distribution of water is similarly shared between Government and the irrigators the former distributing the water as far as the outlets and the latter doing the final distribution 'rom the watecourses to the various fields. [...] In most of the provinces with the exception of Madras Sind and path of Bombay the distribution of the water and the assess ni nt of the revenue form part of the dutiof the engineers of the Public Works Depart mont.
