The Brothers: from the Bengali of Svarnalata

1928

The author tries to right this by banishing one to the Andamans and reducing the other to beggary; but he does it too late and with an effect little more convincing than that of his very lame conclusion to the whole book when he allots to every character the reward due to deeds. [...] His descriptions of the Hamkhali (`Duck-Ditch') villagers and of Bidhubhusan and Nilkamal in their adventures are vivid and delighted; but the 'love interest' is made natural in the restricted circumstances of Hindu society only occasionally and rarely for long and the solution is reached through a series of coincidences and accidents hard to accept. [...] He thought to himself 'Yes! I've seen it at last! That was why he was always getting at me to finish the house first and to coplete its fittings! And he considered giving a woman jewellery and throwing money into a pond came to much the same thing!' This was what he thought. [...] All the excitements that agitate the heart during the day in the tumult of the world vanish at night under the sway of sleep. [...] If you summon me I have to come; and if she summons me I have to come.' She went off to the cook-house and Sarala went to her own room.
