Department of Agriculture. United Provinces. The Cultivation of Maize

1944

It is grown in the hills in the Tarai and Bhabar tracts and in the western as well as in the eastern parts of the province. [...] In India itself it thrives in the cold climate of the hills in the damp and moist climate of submontane districts in the mild and equitable climate of Central India and the Western Presidency of Bombay in the extreme and severe climate of the plains of the United Provinces and the Punjab and in the dry climate of Raj putana. [...] Weeding and Interculture One hand-weeding followed by one-or two-bullock hoeings would keep the field free from weeds in the early stages of growth and maitain the surface much and friable condition of the soil by preventing the formation of crust at the soil surface. [...] In the case of the latter (horses) to avoid a sudden change of food maize can be substituted as a part of the usual allowance of gram lessening the gram gradually to one-third the weight of the maize when the animals are not hard worked and where economy is a cheap consideration and to half and half in other cases. [...] During the first two periods (a) and (b) excepting the differences in manurial treatment no improved cultural treatment was given to the crop; but during the 3rd period 1895-1900 in addition to the diffeences in manurial treatment the crop obtained the benefit of the improved method of cultivation referred to above.
