Archæology in Baroda (1934-1947) (A Brief Review)

1947

Just about forty miles to the east of it lies Vala the ancient Valabhi whichwas the seat of the Maitraka rulers of the Valabhi kingdom till about the eighth century A. D. The site explored seems to have been on the outskirt of a town which appears to have been an important administrative centre under Valabhi as can be inferred from the clay seal bearing the name Siladitya. [...] Thus the majority of the finds are assignable to the period from the 2nd to the 7th cen. [...] It lies out-side the village of Kdmrej the headquarters of the tiluka of the name situated on the Tdpti. [...] The southern bank of the channel is a part of the northern embankment of the Lake and thus forms a common bank. [...] LISTING OF MONUMENTS The Department has undertaken the compilation of an inventory of the monuments in the State.
