Government of Bengal Irrigation Department Joint Inspection Report of the Approaches to the Madaripur Bil Route 1936

1936

Having regard to the continuedevelopment of the Halifax Cut route leading from the Madhumati river southwards past Khulna and to the corresponding deterioration in the Madhumati river below the Halifax Cut the Supeintending Engineer expressed himself as being strongly in favour of takinc measures to stop the further development of the Halifax Cut at the expense of the Madhumati river. [...] Hence the 'Superintending Engineer should investigate the question of closing the Tarail khal by a strong bund at a distance of about one mile from the mouth dowstream of the 3 loops in the khal and submit a report on the same. [...] We inspected the threat to the town of Madaripur very closely and from the deck of the steamer w were able to obtain a good idea of the curve followed by the river its threat to Madaripur. [...] The question of the erosion at Madaripur need not be discussed in this inspection note as it is the subject of separate detailed reports but we gather the impression that judging from the curvature of the river the erosion at Madaripur and above it is likely to continue when the river rises. [...] The question of preventing the erection of bandals has already been mentioned and the necessity of an effective procedure for their prevention is especially felt in the upper reaches of the Arial Khaki river where a navigable outlet to the Padma river is very desirable in the interests of communications.
