The second Peshwa's conquest of Malwa and Gujarat and impact upon the Delhi empire in the north naturally increased the number and importance of the Persian documents relating to the Marathas because Persian was the official language of all those parts. [...] Bearing this definition clearly in mind and remembering the extant records in the Persian language even in relation to Maratha history the position of the materials in the Marathi tongue has been thus stated by me :— Not only is there a striking contrast between the wealtb of contemporary documents in Persian and English that illuminate the history of the Marathas under the Peshwas and the compa [...] I need make here only the barest mention of their own State records in the Marathi language published by the Gaekwad of Bproda (5 vols.) the Amatya of Bavda (2 vols.) the Pant Pratinidhi of Aundh and the family papers of the Purandares (3 Vb1s.) and the Chandrachuds (2 vols.). [...] The supreme importance of the Persian tarikhs I realized when checking or supplying the dates in the Selections from the Peshwas' Daftar the Historical"SOURCES OF MARATHA HISTORY 17 papers relating to Mahadji Sindhia and other printed records of the same age in the Marathi langurge. [...] The political papers of the Peshwas' Daftar will have to be supplemented and completed by adding to them documents of the same time now to be found in the family archives of the Purandares and the Chandrachuds — of wnich 3 and 2 vatumes respectively have been already published and a few from the records of the families of other former high officers.
