I will only mention one or two salient features in the classification of the non-Aryan tribes of these territories which the specimens render self-evident.( 3 ) It is very clear that most of the aboriginal tribes of the Central Provinces and several of those of Western Bengal (including in these latter the Dangars Oraons of Chota Nagpore Paharies of Rajmehal and Khonds of Orissa) are radcal [...] This group comprises the Cooches and Meches of Cooch Behar the Sub-Himalayan Dooars and Goalpara the Cacharees and Mekirs of Assam and Cachar the Garos of the (Taro Hills and the Tipperahs of Hill Tipperah. [...] people nearly allied to these form a large proportion of the population of the great districts of Rungpore and Dinagepore as well as of Julpigoree Goalpara and parts of Assam. [...] The tribes to the north-east of Assam speak a set of languages the affinities of which I know not but of which specimens are given. [...] The comparison of languages of Burmah with several others enables us to trace the more or less remote connection of most of these with the languages of the south-eastern frontier of Bengal and also the curious affinity between the old Pegu language and the Kolarian tongues of Western Bengal.
