THE TRAVELS OF THE ABBÉ CARRÉ IN INDIA AND THE NEAR EAST 1672 TO 1674Translated from the manuscript journal of his travels in the India Office by LADY FAWCETT and edited by SIR CHARLES FAWCETT with the assistance of SIR RICHARD BURN THE TRAVELS OF THE ABBE CARRE IN INDIA AND THE NEAR EAST 1672 TO 1674 IN TWO VOLUMES VOLUME TWO From Bijapur to Madras and St. [...] Early in the sixteenth century the existence of the house or chapel of the apostle on the Cormandel coast was reported to the Viceroy of Goa who made enquiries; and ultimately the Portuguese settled at St. [...] He turned a deaf car to the arguments of the Portuguese priest against it and persuaded the latter to visit the Dutch factory and ask for a passport to enable him to go to Masulipatam on the pretence that he was a French missionary who wanted to take ship there for his destination Siam. [...] He had however to stay the night at a Dutch hostelry where he further disconcerted the gentleman aforesaid by revealing that he was a priest and hinting at the danger of the other's falling into the hands of the Inquisition at Goa because of the attack he had made on Carre. [...] in and iv) is mainly devoted to a detailed account of the proceedings of de la Haye's squadron of nine ships of the line and three of the French Company from the time it left France in March 167o down to the date of Carres arrival at St.
