French prestige had suffered from a recent deprivation of the privilege enjoyed by the other European nations of flying the royal flag over the factory and from other obstructions by the Muhammedan officials of the town though the situation was partly alleviated by the arrival from France of the Soleil d'Orient in September 1 He was the author of the two works mentioned against his name in the [...] What makes it particularly noteworthy is that Carre instead of going by the usual course up the Shatt-al-Dijla branch of the Tigris went from Qurna by the Euphrates and then up the Shatt-al-Hai branch of the Tigris for he seems to be the only European traveller in the seventeenth century who has described this alternative route (cf. [...] With the help of the French Consul and the envoys' agents at Leghorn on the 14th they booked passages in the English ketch Deptford which was expected to leave soon for Marseilles; but this plan was upset by the seizure of an English ship by Majorcan corsairs on the coast. [...] They did this in the hope that neither the Dutch nor the French would be able to send a fleet to India and that it would be a great stroke of business for the English Company as the return of the seven ships laden with valuable goods for England would not onl recompense them for the loss of the three vessels [vol. [...] One can certainly give the English the title of navigators as there is no other maritime nation that in general equals them in the matter of navigation and if they are more proud and haughty The fleet left the Downs on is January 1673 and (with the exception of the Massingberd which had to return to Plymouth for repairs) reached the Coromandel coast (Porto Novo) by as June and Masulipatam by 2
