Finally I am indebted to the Librrian of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society and to the editor of the Subodha Patrika for their having placed at my dispOsal the old files of the Times of India and the Subodha Patrika respectively. [...] Warden then Judicial Commissioner of the Deccan and one of the Members of the Board of Education in the course of a speech in which he entreated the native gentry assembled before him to utilise the College and reap from it the benefits of education he road out to them the following extracts from a despatch from the Court of Directors to the Government of Madras :—" The improvements in educati [...] The same we are told was the case when Government wanted the services of the Shastris to help the Judges of the High Court (then called the Sudder Adawlut) in the adjudication of cases arising under the Hindoo Law. [...] Professor Patton then on the staff of the Elphinstone Insttution once observed of those discussions :—" In the numerous essays on the social condition of India which were read before this Society the position of women and the ; necessity of eduction as a means of raising them in the social scale occupied a prominent place." We gather from one of the earlier reports of the Society that [...] The British Government has undertaken to respect the customs and usagei of its subjects "as far as just and resonable " ( to quote the language of the Proclamation which 3fountstuartElphinstone issued when the British Government took the place of the Peshwa in the Deccan).
