Supplementary Catalogue of the Archaeological Collection of the indian Museum

1911

Peppe in 1898 The majority of the finds are now in the Indian Museum Calcutta except the bones and ashes of Buddha which were presented by the Government of India to the King of Siam. [...] The interest of the finds lies in the inscription around the lid of one of the steatite vases. [...] The translation of this inscription is :— This receptacle of relics of the blessed ' Buddha' of the gayas (is the deposit) of " the brothers of Sukirtti with sisters with sons and wives."' The writing of the inscription points to a very early date 3rd or 4th century B. C. It seems best to translate the inscrition as above and not as has been done by some scholars to refer the Sakiyanath to [...] Likewise the well-known type of the bathing of the new-born Bodhisattva is an adatation of the bathing of Laksmi by the dig-gajas or guardian elephants of the world. [...] The Latin numbers in the following list refer to the numbers of the show-cases on the accompanying plan and the English numbers to the numbers painted in white on the exhibits.
