Any one who has had occasion to read the annual reports of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in England will be aware of the immense range of technical and economical improvements which have accrued to the major industries of Great Britain as the result of the co-operation of responsible Research Boards representing the several industries with the Government Department of Resea [...] E. Director of Industries Bengal for the support and encouragement he has always given the author the interest he has taken in the publication of the book and the foreward he has kindly written for it.iv The author also acknowledges the assistance he has received from the staff of the Bengal Tanning Institute in bringing out this enlarged edition. [...] A large number of cattle of the Punjab and a portion of the United Provinces are infected with warble and the hides from these parts of the country often reveal warble holes. [...] In the cases of green and wet-salted stock the soaking usually consists of washing in 2 or 3 changes of water in the former case to remove the adhering dung and blood and in the latter also the salt which was used for curing. [...] The object of deliming is not only to remove as the name implies the lime from the pelt but with certain classes of hides and skins also to dissolve some protein matter of the grain surface and the yellow elastic fibres to make the final leather smooth on the surface and stretchy to loosen the lime soap formed during liming and the dirt and to bring down the swelling of hides and skins.
