They are (1) the possibility of obtaining enough suitable land within the Indian Empire to produce enough Cinchona bark to supply they whole requirement of India and the greater part of the needs of the rest of the British Empire in the matter of quinine (2) the necessity or otherwise of reorganizing the present system of cultivation of Cinchona and manufacture of quinine ; (3) the question of wh [...] For the purpOse of this report the Ghats may be conveniently divided into the following areas :—(1) The South Canara Ghats; (2) The Malabar Ghats; (3) The Malabar Wynaad; (3a) The Bramahgiris; (3b) The Vellarmala slopes; (4) The Nilgiri plateau; (5) The Nilgiri Wynaad; (6) The Anamalai Hills; (7) The Kanan Devan Hills or High Range of Travancore; (8) The Pulney Hills; (9) The Cardamom Rills of [...] From the summit fine views are got of the undulating country between the Ghats" and the sea on the west of thewestern face of the Ghats as they trend southwards and of the uplands and hill masses of Mysore on the east. [...] The altitude the character of the surface and the liability to severe frost place the cultivation of Cinchona Ledgeriana anywhere on the top of the plateau out of the question. [...] The boundaries—the northern and southern of which are to be taken for the present as quite provisional—suggested are the Tavoy river on the west Siam on the east and the Zinba Chaung on the north ; on the south the boundary follows from west to east the Sedi Chaung tributary of the Tavoy river the Talaingya Chaung down to its junction with the Kyong Pyu up the Kyong Pyu and across to the Ebu C
