[...] After bathing in tl.e tank and woshipping the deity in the Kadamba forest he proceeded to Man.avt-ir and related to the King the existence of a beautiful tank and temple of God in the forest which lay in the west of the city. [...] The comparison of the broad streets to the bed of a river22 and of the houses on either side to tall trees growing on the banks of the river are suggestive of the natural gradient in the streets admitting of a thorough washing down in rain or in flood and the practice of building houses in towns on elevated ground.
