The Education despatches of the Court of Directors of 1813 & 1814 accordingly provided that a sum of not less than £10 000 should be set apart every year out of the surplus for the revival and improvement of literature and the encouragement of the learned natives of India and for the introdution and promotion of a knowledge of the (Oriental) sciences among the inhabitants of the British territ [...] The support of the then Chief Justice Sir Edward Hyde East was enlisted and on the 14th May 1816 a meeting of European and Hindu gentlemen was held in the house of the Chief Justice to discuss the proposal to establish "an institution for giving liberal education to the children of the members of the Hindu community". [...] It was henceforth the aim of the 7"Government to communicate through the means of the English language a complete education in European literature philosophy and science to the greatest number of students." Under Lord Bentinck's Resolution English was adopted as the official language of the Government as well as the medium of public instruction. [...] The Council proposed to close the Hindu College at the end of the session on the 15th April 1854 and on the same day announced the constitution of the Presidency College and the Hindu School. [...] On the occasion of the Centenary celebrations I send the authorities of the Seminary my congratulations upon the effective work which the institution has accomplished for the development of education in Bengal and my sincere good wishes for success in the continuance of this work — The 3rd January 1929.
