1911

To the north lies the Arctic Ocean clogged with ice for the greater part of the year and almost imposgible to navigate ; to the east is the Pacific Ocean ; and to the south are the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. [...] 6. To the north of the Armenian plateau is the vast range of the Caucasus stretching in a line of snowy crests from the Crimea to the shores of the Caspian Sea. [...] The most northerly of them is the 'Tian-shin which curves to the norteast and is the first of a series of ranges which continue the mountain line to the north-easterly etremity of the continent. [...] Between the Kuen-lun and the Karakorum Mountains is the plateau of Tibet the loftiest and the largest in the world. [...] 8. At present Lop-nor receives the drainage of the whole ceatral basin of Asia ; but the streams which flow to it from the Pamirs the Hindu Kush NortWestern Tibet and the mountains enclosing the basin on the north lose so much of their water in traversing the thirsty sands of the Gobi Desert that they are unable to maintain a great permanent lake througout the year.
