The object of the art of agriculture is to icrease the quantity and improve the quality of such vegetable and animal productions of the earth as are used by civilized men ; and the object of the agriculturist is to do this with the least ependiture of the means and least injury to the soil or in other words with profit. [...] The Ayeen"INTRODUCTION ii Akbary contains a set of tables showing the average produce of food stuffs and agricultural products throughout India which dating from the middle of the 17th century were prepared in the reign of Akbar by his great minister Todarmall and were based upon the records of 19 years careful obsertion of the seasons ( the natural philosophers of that age regarded 19 years [...] L The climate and rainfall: -Trees and forests contribute to the formation of springs and water courses ; not only by means of the humidity which they produce and the condensation of vapour by refregeration but also by reason of the obstacles which they present to the evapouration of the water in the soil itself and by means of the roots which by dividing the soil by so many perforations render [...] In the distruction of rocks the oxygen and carbonic acid of the air enter into combination24 SOILS FORMATION OF with some of the minerals of the rocks and the new compound thus formed being softer than the original rock is more readily washed away by rains falling on the rocks thus making holes or crevices in which water lodges and in so doing softens the adjoining parts and make them still mo [...] The liquid is evapourated in the leaves and the solid matter thus produced fills the pores of the leaves which afterwards fall off on the ground thus rturning the mineral matter to the soil again.
