Since the War we have been endeavouring to improve and add to our machinery to cope with the increased crops resulting from the renovation of the gardens but anything charged to revenue in the nature of an addition or an improvement is added back for income tax assessment and in general that accounts for the extremely high ratio of tax to profit. [...] The title deeds of the Company's estates in India are not in this country and consequentl and explanations which to the best of our knowledge and belief were necessary for the pu ppo so far as appears from our examination of those books and proper returns adequate for t: managers at the Gardens.
