CHAPTER I Peelade The foundation of Indian Commercial Organisations on modern lines on the eve as also in the beginning of the 20th century was symptomatic of the spirit of the unrest that prevailed among the enlightened section of the Indian public in regard to the-British rule particularly on the score of its economic results. [...] The members of this Chamber who held the key position in the internal trade in this part of India gave their whole-hearted support to the Indian indutry and gradually switched on from the import trade in Lacashire textiles to the catering of the products of Indian cotton mills all over the hinterland of the Port of Calcutta. [...] After two meeings were held one in the premises of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce uder the Presidentship of the Chairman of the Cacutta Corporation it was decided that the Chamber would appoint a Footpath Inspector to regulate the sending out and the opeing of the consignments on the footpaths. [...] It will be observed that the force at the disposal of the Calcutta Police for the regulation of traffic is by no means excessive." The Commissioner of Police also invited the attention of the Chamber in course of a letter dated the 14th September 1933 to the "existing arrangements of the indiscriminate taking up of the high-ways by various local bodies viz. [...] It has never been organisation exclusively either for the trade or for the industry and as such the Committee of the Chamber have always been able to be apprised of the views which are often conflicting of the different sections of the trade and industry—the difficulties of the commercial community from the industrial magnet to the small retail dealer in a far corner of the country.
