Annual Progress Report on Forest Administration in the Presidency of Bengal for the Year 1938-39

1939

The work in connection with the revision of the working plans for the Kurseong and Jalpaiguri Divisions was commenced by the Working Plan Division during the year. [...] The sanction of Government to the postponement of the revision of the working plan until such time as the demand from reserved forests increases was received after the close of the year under review. [...] As the Manager of the Tea Estate took no action in planting up the area on the notice of the Divisional Forest Officer the matter was reported to the Deputy Commissioner Darjeeling. [...] The presence of large areas of thatch grass (Imperata) outside the reserve the general practice of Awning by the hairnet' and the use of this method of creating plantations all increase the fire hazard. [...] Natural sal (Shorea robusta) seedlings were noticed in abundance in the Upper and Lower Tondu Ranges of the Jalpaiguri Division in the Nimati and Raimatong blocks of the Buxa Division and generally speaking throughout the sal forests of the circle.
