He further observes "It is not in the accidents of the soil in the climate in the existing accumulation of the intruments of production but in the quantity and diffusion of this Immaterial capital that the wealth of a country depends. [...] On the graves of indigenous arts and industries are being seen the trophies raised by foreign competition and capital and the fresness and hilarity of the country-gentleman and the swain are being succeeded by despondency want of vigour and courage and a love of fighting the neighbour at law. [...] The industrial organizations known as co-operative stores and co-operative societies made their presence in the meantime and by reducing the edge of strikes and tradesunions gave evidence of the wisdom of the scientific treatment of commerce and ushered in a golden age for the neglected labourers.8 What have been described above as the abnormal symtoms of commerce are manifesting themselve [...] In short in civilized life wherever commerce fails or defectively prevails for the advantage of a few and to the detriment of the largest number diminution of vitality in the body politic with threatened extinction in the long run must surely be the consequence ; for whence is wealth to come from to reconstruct the used up parts or replenish the empty ones employed in the work of existence ? Th [...] The strict adherence to ready-money principle ffords no scope for bad debts book-locked capital and litigtion so embarrassing to the trades and detrimental to profit ; and saves thus the unpleasant feeling between customer and trader introduced by the credit system ; while the purchase of things at the lowest prices and to have at the same time the pick of the market is rendered feasible b
