[...] The weather and rainfall are reported to have been unfavourable for the growth of the crop at the beginning in the most important jute district of Purnea. [...] As the total area is insignificant and the plant is grown for the domestic use of the cultivators the figures for this district have been excluded from the forecast. [...] [NOTE.—On the average of the five years ending 1935-36 the area under jute in Assam represents some 51 per cent of the total area under jute in British India.] Season.—As explained in the preliminary forecast weather conditions were not satisfactory in the beginning of the season but improved to some extent later although rainfall was scanty in most of the districts.
