From 1919 onwards Goverment has made a series of special grants for the expansion of primary and secondary education and the improvement of teachers' pay ; and by 1921 the ratio of scholars per 1 000 of the population in rural areas reached 38.9 the highest in the Province. [...] Hargreaves's excavations was the discovery of three standing images of Buddha bearing inscritions dated in the years 154 and 157 (473 aid 476 A. D.) respectively of the Gupta era in the reigns of Kumaragupta and Budhagupta of the Imperial Gupta dynasty. [...] consisted on the one hand in the general clearance and improvement of the whole of the acquired area and the conservation of the buildings laid bare in the previous exploration and on the other in excavation of different parts of the site. [...] The most noteworthy undertaking of the latter description was the examination of the unexplored area to the east of the Main Shrine which led to the discovery of an extensive fore-court which was added to the Main Shrine about the 8th or 9thALTERATIONS AND ADDITIONS. [...] Almost opposite Ratnuagar on the lett bank of the Ganges is the Benares Hindu University the foundation stone of which was laid by the Viceroy in 1916.
