[...] In Calcutta with its suburbs in the 24-Parganas and Howrah the total population is 1 485 582 of which 1 196 734 is found in Calcutta including the municipal area Fort William and the Maidan the Port and Canals 63 975 in the two suburban municipalities and 224 873 in the adjacent city of Howrah.
