The work forms part of the complete geological survey of the districts in which the iron ores of Orissa occur, and is a section of the Bihar and Orissa party's programme Reason for the our under the superintendence of Mr. [...] The shales which, for the most part, form the southern and central portion of the Singhbhum plains, merge into the Kolhan hills to the south and into the Porahat hills to the west. [...] The general level of the Ranchi plateau is a little over 2,000 feet, which is also the general level of the highest hills in the Kolhan, whilst the hills of the Dalma volcanics may rise to 3,000 feet. [...] The first connected account of the geology of Singhbhum was that by V. Ball in his " Geology of the Districts of Manbhum and Singhbhum," the result of work carried out between 1862 and 1868, but before that date there had been several published accounts of the minerals of portions of the district. [...] This con- sist; of a general account of the Archseans of India, and of the important position of the Archaean of Singhbhum.
