This transformation of the university becomes evident when the university-teacher and the student-leader"vi FOREWORD come to play an equal part, not only in the mind of the younger generation, but also in the curri- culum and the administration of the University. [...] In- spired partly by the history of the Burschenschaf- ten," the famous student fraternities of the 19th century, partly by the ideas of the new youth movement, the students did not hesitate to join in the effort of the whole people to overcome the disastrous present and past. [...] Another aspect of the social problem of the student in Germany was to recruit a new genera- tion of the German intelligentsia out of all classes of the nation and specially to give to the gifted student from the poorer classes equal opportunity to enter the university. [...] From the very beginning the dissatisfaction of the students with the present system of study and the goal of university-reform formed an essential consideration in the activities of I. S. [...] Finally—when the problem of India became a burning question, Indian as well as Wsrstarm students wanted an exchange of views on the problems of the present student-generation of India at home and abroad.
