The vitality of the West, which expressed itself in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in daring voyages round the wdriffr lind in trading enterprises which brought the wealth . of the East to the comparatively poor countries of temperate Europe, has, in the past two hundred years enabled these strong western nations to 'extend their eco- nomic and political power to the ends of the earth.
