Government of West Bengal On the occasion of Laying the Foundation Stone OF THE INSTITUTE OF RADIO PHYSICS AND ELECTRONICS VOTE OF THANKS : PROFESSOR S. K. MITRA UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA The 21st April 1944 MR. [...] The Institute of which I have laid the foundation stone is to foster the study and research on the rapidly growing science of Radio Physics and Elec- tronics, or in short, Radio-electronics. [...] These developments proceeded in three;"2 distinct stages : The first stage was the development and perfection of wireless telegraphy in the period between Hertz's work in the closing years of the list century and the outbreak of World War I. I f. '. 1e second Stage was the development, of radio-electronics in the period intervening the two World Wars : the third is the present age of micro-waves or [...] These two branches of Physics have been responsible for the development of the two epoch- making weapons of world -War IT the radar and the atomic bomb. [...] And, in our laboratory, we have been devising radio-electronic3 eqttipment for studying some fine properties of the atomic nucleus the magnetic moment and the electric quadruple moment the determinations of which are of utmost importance to the nuclear physicist.
