Career Lecture Serial No. 11. Insurance as A Career - A Lecture delivered under the auspices of the Appointment and Information Board Calcutta Unviersity in the Asutosh Hall on 10th March 1939

No sooner has the University realised the necessity of diverting the attention of the students and youths of Bengal towards com- mercial careers than they introduced The Appointment and Information Board " to take effective steps in the matter. [...] Thus the germ of Insurance, which originated in meeting the perils of the seas, was gradually extended, with the expansion of civilization, to cover loss of not only marine but of human life and every kind of property that comes to a man's possession, against nature's vicissitudes. [...] Since the collection of datas and tabulation of Mortality Charts from the birth and death Registers and Invest- ment Returns in Europe over a century and a half ago and the introduction of Actuarial Science and establishment of Institute of Actuaries in London and some other Western cities in the middle of the nineteenth century, the progress of Life Insurance business in the Western countries has [...] This will increase the capa- city for work in every sphere of social life and awaken the minds of the people to the need for higher standards of living and thus create a motive power for developing the resources of the country. [ 14 ] Standing here before my young friends I feel inclined to say a few words about character-building. [...] The greatest defects of the Bengali character that stand in the way of complete and continued success in trade are, so far as I can see, unwillingness to do the ground7 work which necessarily is tedious and to do the same with utmost economy, want of level-headedness and attempts to get quick results.
